wednesday quote: a natural high

RECALL THAT SUMMER film list I created a while back? I've actually finished almost all of those titles- so this weekend it was onto uncharted Netflix territory. I have to admit, the film title "Sex of the Angels" didn't sound very appealing to me. The cover art actually slightly repelled me. But Astrid Berges-Frisbey is pretty high up on my girl crush list, so I thought- why not give it a chance?

And this Spanish film turned out to be beautiful. Seductive, effortlessly moody, like another version of The Dreamers ... meets The Weekend (Ok... didn't make that one to the end). It wasn't a perfect movie by any means- it felt draining and repetitive at many points. But certain moments in between the dramatic tears were just lovely, in a youthfully reckless, exhilarating kind of way. Astrid plays Carla, a photographer working at a small, up and coming magazine (bonus points), who gets caught in a twisted love triangle with her boyfriend Bruno, and his love interest, Rai.

There's a scene where Carla wakes up one morning, and with white light streaming in, and a Nikon film camera in hand, she takes photo after photo of her sleeping boyfriend. After witnessing everything they've gone through together, it's such a perfectly intimate feeling. And the quote above (a conversation Carla and Rai had while walking the streets of Spain together) was probably my favorite scene from the whole movie. I had to replay the scene about five times to get the words right, it was rather mesmerizing. It's a sinful beauty, a breathtaking kind of natural high. There's nothing perfect about it, but it's so true, and so captivating. The best kind of romance, no?

Have you seen this film, or any that make you feel this way? Let me know!

New In: Totokoelo!

- photos by me -

EARLIER last week, I mentioned a certain store (Totokaelo) that carried loafers (Dieppa Restrepo) that I fell head over heels for (hah). They were absolutely gorgeous, and... about $100 over my budget. And then they went on sale. Long story short, my willpower is virtually nonexistent sometimes. And before I knew it, I was entering numbers and info faster than my mind could say no.

Well, here they are in all their glory- my first official Totokaelo purchase! I'd been looking for two things in a shoe: nude tone, clean cut loafers. I just love the wooden heel with the black trim against the light pallet. I've yet to wear them outside the house, but from what I can tell, they are plenty comfortable. (Let's be honest though, I would wear Dieppa Restrepo if the shoe was two sizes too small, because what's a little pain in the name of a good shoe). I wanted to take time to photograph the pair because 1) they're wildly photogenic 2) the lighting in my room this day was so dark and moody, I couldn't resist.

SO.... I'VE been a little absent from the blog this week. But I'm back today with some pretty exciting news- as I'm sure you noticed when you landed on this page! Well, here it is right in front of our eyes- I've finally, finally updated the design of my blog (Ahh!!!)

I'll be the first to admit that I'm a perfectionist to a fault, and like most things, it took me a long time to decide on a new layout... it's been MONTHS since I first saw this design, and fell in love! Really, I owe the thanks to my friends who pushed me to keep blogging and make the upgrade. I love it, and I hope you do too! Bear with me as I tweak it over the next couple weeks :)

Search for beauty in stillness.

And time

without the delicate limbs of a wristwatch.

Search for form

illuminated by the contrast of nature.

Hold onto moments

of impermanence.

of fragility.

of fear and love.

A fog that lifts your thoughts.

A muse that looks, feels, discovers

like you.

Like us.

pairings : dark bloom

HERE IS THE second set of photos I've created in the "pairing" series! The last pairing I created, titled "noir", (which you can see here )
was also inspired by darkly beautiful blooms... but what can I say - their mood, their form, their visual power intrigues me endlessly.
Dark florals, peonies in this case, and pure human movement in the simplest of style.

Other images I'm inspired by this week:

Now, I'll share with you a few things to get you through the week!

1. This video might be the most unoriginal thing I could post as a blogger, but I can't help it. Time and time again, Zara's video campaigns
stun me with their simple power. And out of all their videos, this is the one I come back to every time. I also thought their summer 14
campaign was brilliant. And a little hint: a photo shoot inspired is in the VERY near future!!

2. Lusting after these black loafers from totokoelo, one of my favorite stores for menswear inspired looks.

3. Currently reading: East of Eden by John Steinbeck. Admittedly, it was a little hard to get into, but I am absolutely loving it now, and
somehow, even with the numerous recommendations I heard, I never quite anticipated his writing to be this good. With that said... next
on the list: Girl Boss and The Man Repeller (hey, its summer- some lighter reading is necessary.)

4. I recently resurrected my tumblr from the dead, and gave it a big makeover. Do take a look if pinterest isn't enough for you :)

Have a lovely Monday!

Friday, July 4, 2014

GOOD MORNING and happy Friday! I hope your ears are ready, because today,  the playlist Victor and I created together is finally here for listening! Sharing music is such a fun experience, and I actually look forward to sending music as much as I enjoy receiving it. I think it's fair to say we've both introduced each other to some incredible songs. This playlist was inspired by the ease of summer- think breezy palms, light blues, and soft reflections. Caribbean weather... a welcome change from my summer in San Francisco right?

For part two of this playlist, make sure to check out Victor's blog!
